Here is the route I’ve just taken through West Africa. Originally I was to fly from Niamey to Zinder on the first leg but was bumped from the flight. The week before I arrived, AlQaeda of the Islamic Maghreb had kidnapped 5 French aid workers in Agadez in northern Niger, so no one could drive up there. All flights from the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) were being used to transport aid workers up to Agadez. After diving to Zinder and shooting there, UNHAS had resumed flights throughout Niger and we were able to fly from Zinder to Diffa and later from Diffa back to Niamey. Then it was driving the rest of the way across the Sahel.
